AKROREIA

AREA - ATTRACTIONS

Goura is the seat of the Feneos Municipality, located at the borders of the Corinthia, Achaea, and Arcadia regions. It is a beautiful village nestled at the foot of Mount Ziria, the mountain where Hermes was born from Zeus and the nymph Maia, and is filled with old stone-built two-story houses.

The Oikonomou - Goura Mansion stands out, located in the large and picturesque square, opposite the Church of the Archangels with its impressive architecture, built in 1880.

The entire Feneos Municipality area generously offers visitors images, colors, and emotions. You can find and discover them by visiting Lake Doxa, admiring its alpine surroundings, the Monastery of Saint George, built in 1693, and the Panagia of the Rocks with its towering rocks reminiscent of Meteora. Enjoy hiking the mountain trails on the slopes of Ziria and Chelmos, regions included in the Natura 2000 network, and discover a large number of plant species (124).

You will feel the myth of Hercules, who constructed large channels to direct the waters of the plain to the Sinkholes, which still operate today. These sinkholes are also connected to another myth, claiming they were entrances to the Underworld, through which Demeter descended to the Underworld in search of her beloved daughter Persephone.

It’s worth seeing...

Lake Doxa: Built in 1996, it is the main attraction of the area. On the 'island' of the lake stands the small church of Saint Phanourios, with surrounding ruins indicating its age. It is said to have been constructed before the fall of Constantinople and is believed to be the old monastery of Saint George.

Monastery of Saint George: Built in 1693 on Mount Krathis, amidst a dense forest of ancient trees, this monastery compels a visit. The frescoes, unique iconostasis, hidden school, architecture, as well as the tranquility, hospitality, and stunning views of Lake Doxa, will make the monastery a cherished part of your experience.

Panagia of the Rock: Perched on a rock reminiscent of Meteora, the small church of Panagia of the Rock nestles there. The sight is awe-inspiring. If you let your gaze drift to the highest point of the rock, you'll see a white cross standing tall. Its presence creates the impression that the entire rock is the church's facade, with the ancient fir trees serving as its roof.

Mount Kyllini (Ziria): The second highest mountain in the Peloponnese and the birthplace of Hermes. It invites you to explore its rich flora and fauna, its caves and lakes, through countless trails. If fortune smiles upon you, you might even encounter a herd of wild horses that roam the area.

Katavothres (Sinkholes): The natural endpoint of the Olbios River, which runs through the entire Feneos Valley. Myths and legends link them with gods and demigods who traversed the area in ancient times. In the past, when they were blocked, they transformed the entire valley into a lake, the boundaries of which are still discernible today.
